LBC Music Ministry
Dear Friend,
Most every born again Christian is aware of our God-given privilege and responsibility to read, study and live out the infallible teachings of the Word of God. We understand the many commandments of Scripture to hide the Word of God in our hearts. Modern-day Christianity, however, has forgotten that one of the great ways to grow spiritually is by singing and hearing the right kind of biblical music.
In Colossians 3:16-17, the Bible says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
Scriptural singing helps us admonish and encourage one another in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. Scriptural singing teaches and encourages us, while it prepares our hearts and minds for service to the King of kings.
The last thing Jesus did before entering the Garden of Gethsemane was to pause and sing a hymn with His disciples, “And when they had sung and hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives” (Matthew 26:30).
One day, the four living creatures and twenty-four elders in Heaven will fall down before Jesus Christ and sing a new song saying, “Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” (Revelation 5:9).
We believe one of the great distinguishing characteristics of Bible-believing Christianity should be our music. The music of our Godly heritage and in Christ-honoring churches of this present day is distinct, clean and edifying to all who hear. After all, we have been saved by the Blood of the Lamb, and we look forward to an eternal home in Heaven. These thoughts and many more should cause us to reflect the sentiments of the psalmist in Psalm 40:3, “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.”
Looking back to the early Christian churches, however, the greatest need is for people to sing from their hearts, following the leaders of the congregation in making a predominate and joyful noise to the Lord. Churches may have fine musicians and musical instruments, but if the congregation is not spiritual and enthusiastic in making melody, the music service will not be all God intends it to be!
Sing the old tried and true hymns of the faith that are doctrinally sound and scripturally based and allow the words and melodies to dwell in your heart, richly!
